Santa Rosa – Redwood Regional Medical Group is now using a new applicator to deliver radiation to certain breast cancer patients. Known as Accelerated Partial Breast Irradiation (APBI), the SAVI applicator’s multi-catheter design enables a breast cancer patient to complete her radiation treatment in 5 days instead of several weeks.
SAVI allows Redwood’s oncologists to carefully direct and modulate the radiation dose. By using a more precisely targeted dose of radiation, SAVI treats the tissue surrounding the lumpectomy cavity while minimizing the exposure of healthy tissue to radiation.
“By tailoring the radiation for individual patients, SAVI allows many more women to choose partial breast irradiation. It requires only 5 treatment days, and spares healthy tissue from radiation exposure,” says Dr. Cindy Scharfen, Radiation Oncologist.
The SAVI is a major improvement over other APBI devices. For women wishing to learn more about this treatment, please call Redwood’s New Patient Coordinator at (707) 525-4048.
