Radiation Oncology
Redwood Regional Medical Group offers radiation oncology services to treat cancer using Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) and Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) at our outpatient clinics in Santa Rosa, Petaluma and Ukiah, along with a new state-of-the-art treatment option for some breast cancer patients using the SAVI Applicator. As leaders and innovators in the use of these state-of-the-art treatments, our radiation oncologists can provide you with options that take advantage of numerous advanced techniques in radiation oncology available today to treat cancer, including access to nationwide research and clinical trials.
Every one of our radiation oncologists is board certified, completing their residency and their specialty training in radiation oncology at the finest medical institutions from around the United States. By virtue of their broad training in all aspects of adult medicine, they are uniquely qualified to coordinate the complex care of patients requiring all the other types of cancer treatment offered at Redwood Regional Medical Group, including medical oncology services and surgery.
Whatever type or combination of radiation therapy you receive, you will be cared for by a team of medical professionals dedicated to make sure you get the best possible results from treatment. Besides your radiation oncologist, this team will include:
Medical Physicist: Medical physicists at the Redwood Regional Medical Group work directly with your radiation oncologist in the treatment planning, quality control program, and delivery of a radiation therapy plan. They oversee the work of the dosimetrist and help ensure that complex treatments are properly tailored for your specific situation. Each have advanced degrees, together with several years of clinical physics training, and each is certified by the American Board of Medical Physics.
Dosimetrist: Our dosimetrists work with your radiation oncologist and the medical physicist to create a treatment plan that is just right for your situation. Their job is to carefully calculate the dose of radiation and develop a number of treatment plans that can best destroy the tumor while sparing the normal tissues. All of our dosimetrists are licensed by the Medical Dosimetrist Certification Board.
Radiation Therapist: Our radiation therapists are highly skilled licensed members of your cancer management team. They are responsible for accurately recording, interpreting and administering the treatment prescribed by your radiation oncologist. During your treatment they observe your clinical progress and share that information with your radiation oncologist. All of our radiation therapists are certified by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.
Radiation Oncology Nurse: The relationship with your nurse is just as important as the relationship you share with your radiation oncologist. As part of the care team, your nurse's job is to help evaluate your health before treatment begins and throughout the treatment schedule. Your nurse will educate you about potential side effects and their management. During the course of radiation treatments you may be evaluated weekly, or more frequently if necessary, by your nurse to assess problems and concerns. Our radiation oncology nurses are registered and licensed to practice professional nursing.
