What is Targeted Therapy?
Targeted Therapy is the newest tool in the fight against cancer. For some cancers, oncologists now have an understanding of the biologic underpinnings of how the cancer cells grow, divide and spread. Oncologists and other research scientists have developed treatments that specifically target pathways in cancer cells that the cells need to survive. Some of these new treatments target blood vessels that cancer cells need to grow.
These new treatments are often given in combination with other cancer treatments and can provide additional benefit. These agents can be given orally or intravenously, depending on the agent used.
